DOCUMENTARY ON EARLY MEDIEVAL HISTORY - ÆTHIOP SOC: ACMÆH

The Monastery of brother Kings 'Aabraha Wa-'Aasbah, it is an early 4th Century Rock-Hewn Monastery in Northern AEthiopia. (The Wukro Rock-Hewn Church mentioned in the documentary is featured on the banner of the AETHIOP SOC home page above.)

Æthiopian history reaches as far back as the fifth millennium B.C., as clearly illustrated in indigenous history, while it was at the dawn of third millennium (B.C.) that, the ancient Æthiopian civilization, grew from one stem into many branches (tribes or family groups). This caused a diversity of cultures, which by influence and exchange with other nations, not long thereafter, included principally the Ægyptian, Hellenic and Israelitish cultures among others.
In early antiquity the borders of Æthiopia fringed on the Upper (southern-most) Ægyptian boarder to its north, while unto Madagascar to its south. It reached unto the Atlantic Ocean to the west, while having the lush fauna of the Red Sea to its east.

The diversity of tribes held their own rule, yet still subordinate to the heads of the principal Æthiopian tribe, who was a king of kings if you will, similar to other national models, in the East & West.

***Archaeological Excursion to AEthiopia***

MARTIN RANDAL TRAVEL: Award-Winning Expert-Led Cultural Tours
(In Cooperation with the British Heritage Fund)

Ethiopia: Tracing one of Africa's most fascinating Histories
First Excursion: 27th February - 14th March 2013 G.C.
Second Excursion: 9 - 24th October 2013

"Ethiopia is always a surprise to the first-time visitor. Much of it comprises an isolated plateau, riven by deep gorges, that has ensured its physical separation both from its African neighbours and from the lands across the Red Sea. Its peoples and their cultures are distinct, and for thousands of years this has been reflected in their history and art.

Led by Professor David Phillipson, an archaeologist with over 40 years experience in East Africa, this tour traces that cultural heritage through some of the continent's most striking landscapes. The principal historical centres of Lalibela, Axum, Gondor, Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar are explored, as are lesser-known sites including the isolated rock-hewn churches of Eastern Tigray."
